Ethical Breeders
VS UnEthical breeders.
We are a registered
kennel through CKC. This essentially means that nobody else can
register a puppy with this name and that is it. -Nothing
else. Many times I see people boasting that they are a
registered kennel and because of this they are quality breeders. The
truth is, anyone can register a kennel throught CKC as
long as you are a member and pay the fee. Its doesn't mean
that they are better quality or better breeders... CKC only tracks
bloodlines NOT quality. So it is up to you as a prospective
puppy buyer to determine whether the breeder you are looking at
is
the
one you are willing to work with for your new pet.
Below is some basic
information to take into consideration when looking for a good
breeder:
-
A good breeder
will have proof that their breed conforms to the breed standard.
The only way to prove this is with a conformation championship
certificate.
-
A good breeder
will guarantee their puppies from breed specific health problems
and have proof of health testing of the parents either through OFA
or OVC or another. Regardless of where they go, a health
certificate is issued and should be readily available to view.
They will be able to describe in great detail what the health
problems are for their specific breed.
-
A good breeder
will not only be a member of the CKC but also usually a member of
their breeds national club and sometimes local kennel
club.
-
A good breeder
will follow the code of ethics as set forth by the CKC and their
National breed club. This includes only breeding of Mature,
healthy animals. In small dogs this is around 18 months old and in
larger breeds over age 2yrs. And yes, everyone has 'Opps's,' but
beware the breeder that seems to have them more often than not,
sometimes its just a convenient excuse.
-
A good breeder
will welcome you into their home where you can meet all their
dogs. Regardless of whether the dogs have free run of the house or
not, each dog should be well socialized, happy and healthy. Nails
should be trimmed and neat looking. The dogs should be neither too
fat nor too thin. Eyes should be bright and alert and tails
wagging. The living environment whether a kennel or in the house
should be relatively clean. (not everyone has the most beautiful
home and some of us have 5 million kids LOL... please keep in mind
that not every house is perfectly spotless) The exercise yard
should be clean, free of debris and excessive feces.
-
A good breeder
will never EVER sell puppies to a pet shop, as a wholesale item or
to a commercial breeding establishment. Pet
stores have
to sell to anyone who has money,
it is the law. It
dos NOT
matter if the person has been convicted
of animal cruelty in the
past. CKC bylaws state that anyone placing puppies
is suppose to screen homes for suitability and pet
stores do not and will not. NOT under ANY circumstance will
a good breeder EVER sell a
puppy in a pet store. Pet stores will tell
you ANYTHING to make the sale, puppies are nothing
more than a bad of dog food there. Most times
you will get false papers... Don't fall victim!
-
A good breeder will do everything
possible to protect their chosen breeds integrity. This includes
only selling pet puppies on NON-breeding contracts and
spay/neuter contracts. Beware of breeders who will sell a pup or dog with
'breeding rights' for more money regardless if its pet quality.
-
A good
breeder will do everything to protect 'you' the new owner. This includes
a good health guarantee of at least 2 years. Health problems
usually don't present within the first year of life an in my opinion a
1 year health guarantee is just a cop-out. The breeder will also
give 24/7 support and if your life circumstance changes, they will
at least help find a home for the dog if for some reason you
cannot keep it.
-
In my opinion, A good breeder doesn't "shoot down" or
Gossip about another breeder. Everyone has different opinions and
are entitled to such. A good breeder will respect others opinions
whether they agree or not. Right now we all have the right
to our opinions regarding
our breeding programs... slowly we are losing our rights with
BSL and the banning of ear cropping and tail docking just
to mention a few. If you don't have my back, who's going to have
yours?
-
A good breeder doesn't necssarily
show or special alot of
dogs. Everyone has limits as to
what they are able to spend on their dogs show career. Some
are lucky and can spend alot of money to 'campaign' a dog. Others have
limited budget and are uable to. Again this is
a very individual issue and you must research and make a choice
that best suits you for your new puppy.
-
In my opinion,
A good breeder is not a "sore loser" and will never conduct
themselves in a unprofessional manner during a loss at a dog show.
Below is some basic information to take into consideration
when looking to avoid an unethical Breeder, remember this
is just my opinion as I am entitle
to:
- They will have no
proof that their dogs conform to any breed standard and will not
participate in any dog sports.
- The will have no
proof of any health testing. Some breeders do more and
some less. It is up to you to research and go with what
makes you comfortable.
- They will
advertise as this particular dog as being "rare" or use other
sales gimmiks like "Teacup" "King sized"
"F1" "F1B" this is all made up lingo to make them
sound better then what they really are. There is no
breed standard on the face of the planet that
has 'Teacup' as a size. All this is, is a undersized
puppy that may have health problems down the road, and by all
means there is no such breed reconized by the AKC,
CKC, FCI or any true registry as a
'labradoodle' 'goldendoodle' or any other 'oodle' or
'poo'cross. Be very, very careful, usually this is just
to get more money for the cross breed dog that they are
selling. I remember when a cross breed dog
was around $100 at the most! Now these dogs sell for more
then I ask for my well bred PURE puppies? What is the
justification? I can show you my accounting records. Lets see
theirs!
- Be very careful also when
looking at a fancy website online. The internet is a great
way for the unethical breeder to camoflauge and put up great pictures
of the cute puppies. They word things very carefully
and boast about "Champion Lines" which might only
be one or two champions in a 5 generation pedigree. Many
times they will throw around big kennel names
where their 'lines' come from. The will know next to
nothing about these kennels other then they are or were successful.
Look carefully at the pictures on these
websites they sometimes will slip up and instead of the cute puppy
sitting with the flowers or teddy bear they will show you what
is truely 'behind the scenes'... Dirty kennels, dishes,
exessive debris in the runs or yard. Look at
the expression of each dog, are they scared?
Skinny? hallow looking? dirty? Do they have any sores on thier
body? The other thing that really irks me is seeing plenty of pictures
of the dogs but each female either
is pregnant or has milk. Is
the dog pregnant and nursing so often that they can't take any
pictures of her without? There are so many pictures that I've
seen where the dogs actually look terrified by being handled in
the picture. It breaks my heart. And it breaks my
heart that there are actually people out there
still supporting them by buying puppies from them!
Pictures ARE worth a thousand words if you really know
how to look at them.
